Background of the Study
Traditional taboos are a cornerstone of cultural identity and serve as informal guidelines for acceptable behavior. In Ilorin South, these taboos have historically provided a framework for moral conduct, delineating behaviors that are socially acceptable and those that are forbidden (Olu, 2023). They reinforce ethical norms and help maintain social order by deterring actions considered harmful to communal well-being (Soyinka, 2024). Although modernization and globalization have introduced alternative moral paradigms, traditional taboos still exert a significant influence on individual behavior and community interactions (Bello, 2025). This study examines the role of traditional taboos in shaping moral conduct, evaluating how they function as both cultural preservers and social regulators in a rapidly evolving society (Olu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite their historical importance in guiding behavior, traditional taboos in Ilorin South are facing challenges due to the pressures of modernization. As traditional values are increasingly questioned, the decline in strict adherence to taboos may lead to moral ambiguity and social disintegration (Bello, 2025). This study seeks to investigate the impact of diminishing taboos on moral conduct and social cohesion. The aim is to understand how the erosion of these cultural norms affects ethical behavior and what can be done to preserve beneficial traditional guidelines (Olu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the influence of traditional taboos on moral conduct in Ilorin South.
2. To examine the changes in the observance of these taboos over time.
3. To recommend strategies for preserving the positive aspects of traditional moral guidelines.
Research Questions:
1. How do traditional taboos influence moral conduct in Ilorin South?
2. What changes have occurred in the observance of these taboos?
3. How can traditional moral guidelines be maintained in modern society?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Traditional taboos significantly influence moral behavior.
2. Modernization is negatively correlated with adherence to traditional taboos.
3. Educational interventions can reinforce traditional moral standards.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of traditional taboos on moral conduct, offering insights into how cultural norms shape ethical behavior. The results will benefit community leaders, educators, and policymakers in designing programs that preserve positive traditional values while adapting to modern societal changes (Olu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the influence of traditional taboos on moral conduct in Ilorin South Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on local cultural practices and their ethical implications.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Traditional Taboos: Culturally imposed prohibitions that regulate behavior.
2. Moral Conduct: Behavior that aligns with the accepted ethical standards of society.
3. Social Cohesion: The degree of connectedness and solidarity among community members.
